Schedule Monday – Friday, Eastern Time business hours
Do you use Ruby everyday? Like building something from the ground up? Equity Opportunity?
About the Opportunity We are a modern technology and services company transforming how organizations source, employ, and manage contract workers. Our goal is to provide a turnkey, full-stack software and service experience for an industry traditionally dominated by manual, cumbersome processes. We are a growing organization with an experienced engineering team and a production platform serving real customers every day. Our customers include fast-growing technology companies and innovative organizations operating in areas such as autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies. We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join our Feature Team as we continue scaling delivery capacity across our core platform. This role is ideal for an experienced senior engineer who can quickly understand business context, collaborate closely with product partners, own features end-to-end, and help improve the overall effectiveness of the engineering team. 1 About the Role You'll work on our core staffing and workforce management application—a large, modular Rails codebase operating with real production constraints. Work often begins as loosely defined problem statements. Senior engineers are expected to bring context to those problems, shape practical solutions, clarify tradeoffs, and deliver changes that are maintainable and easy for future engineers to build upon. You'll sometimes lead initiatives and sometimes work under the direction of another senior engineer. In every situation, you'll be expected to communicate clearly, thoughtfully challenge assumptions when appropriate, and keep delivery moving forward.
What You'll Do • • • • • • • • Own large product features end-to-end, from shaping the technical approach through delivery. Break down ambiguous business and technical problems into clear, actionable solutions. Work closely with product partners to clarify requirements and thoughtfully manage scope. Communicate proactively with teammates and leadership regarding delivery expectations and progress. Review code with a strong focus on maintainability and long-term quality—not just correctness. Write and maintain automated tests as a core responsibility. Improve legacy areas of the codebase incrementally and pragmatically. Use AI development tools, such as Copilot and Claude, to improve productivity while maintaining full accountability for the code you ship. Technology Stack • • • • • • Backend: Ruby on Rails 8.1 Frontend: React 18.3, with some Stimulus and Turbo Datastores: PostgreSQL and Redis Infrastructure: Cloud-based application platform CI/CD: GitHub Actions Architecture: Modular monolith with engineers working across the full stack What Senior-Level Means in This Role A Senior Software Engineer is trusted to: • Own projects from concept through delivery. 2 • • • Coordinate effectively with teammates contributing to the same initiative. Make thoughtful technical tradeoffs without perfect information. Improve team velocity and effectiveness—not just individual output. Senior engineers are not expected to operate on autopilot or wait for detailed instructions. They proactively identify opportunities to improve how work gets done. Compared with a mid-level engineer, senior engineers take greater ownership and initiative. Compared with staff-level engineers, the focus is more heavily on execution and team effectiveness than broader organizational or cultural leadership. Production Ownership • • • • On-call responsibilities are very limited. A dedicated on-call engineer handles most production support and escalates issues to the Feature Team when necessary. Expected involvement in production debugging is relatively low. Expectations around testing, maintainability, and code quality are high. Requirements • • • • • • Significant real-world experience with Ruby on Rails. Experience owning large product features from concept through delivery in a product-focused organization. Strong experience writing and maintaining automated tests. Comfortable partnering closely with product managers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with remote teammates while remaining highly communicative and proactive. Approximately 8–10 years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent depth demonstrated through technical impact and accomplishments. Preferred Qualifications • • • • • Experience leading work involving Stimulus and Turbo. Experience working in entrepreneurial, startup, or early-stage environments. Strong end-to-end testing practices. Experience with ERP-style data modeling or complex business domains. Experience in staffing, HR technology, workforce management, marketplaces, or similar platforms. 3 Interview Process Candidates can expect to: • • • • Read and discuss a small Rails application. Identify meaningful opportunities for improvement. Walk through a previous project in depth and explain—and potentially critique—technical decisions. Be evaluated on clarity, humility, collaboration, judgment, and impact, in addition to technical ability. Benefits The company offers a comprehensive benefits package, including: • • • • • • • • • Equity opportunities Medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and eligible dependents Life and disability insurance Paid parental leave Work-from-home and home office support Company-provided Apple laptop Phone and internet stipend Flexible/unlimited paid time off, along with paid office holidays 401(k) retirement plan About the Company Our mission is to make it easier for companies to build and manage high-performing contract workforces. Today, many mid-sized organizations managing contract workers must navigate significant legal, financial, talent acquisition, and operational complexities—often relying on multiple disconnected solutions for sourcing talent, employing workers, tracking workforce activity, and managing day-to-day operations. Our platform brings technology and human expertise together to provide organizations with more integrated tools and services for managing contract workforces efficiently and compliantly. We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace and encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to apply. This is a full-time, permanent position open to candidates authorized to work in the United States who are able to work during Eastern Time Zone business hours. Sponsorship and corp-to-corp arrangements are not available.
