Job Description

Director, FP&A (Confidential, PE-Backed Utility Infrastructure Services Platform)

Location: Remote (with occasional travel to operating locations across the West/Mountain regions)

Compensation: Base salary of $170,000, plus an annual performance-based bonus targeted at 20% and comprehensive benefits.

Company Overview

We are partnered with a newly combined, private equity-backed utility infrastructure services platform operating across the U.S. The company delivers essential construction and maintenance services spanning electric distribution, transmission, substation, and communications infrastructure for investor-owned utilities, federal power agencies, electric cooperatives, and public utility districts.

Backed by a leading middle-market private equity firm, the platform is pursuing aggressive organic and inorganic growth following a simultaneous multi-company combination, making this an exceptional time to join a scaling leadership team.

Position Overview

The organization is seeking an entrepreneurial Director, FP&A to build and professionalize the FP&A function from the ground up.

This is a true build opportunity. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will design the consolidation architecture, build out forecasting and budgeting capabilities, and stand up the operational analytics that drive strategic decision-making across the platform. This is a high-impact business partnering role: you will work side-by-side with executive leadership and field operations to uncover operational drivers, track margin and productivity opportunities, and deliver executive-ready reporting to the Board, lenders, and sponsors.

The role begins as an individual contributor with the expectation that you will build and scale a team as the platform expands.

Key Responsibilities

(Note: Scope reflects the build-out expected over the first 12–18 months)

  • Management Reporting: Build and maintain the consolidated monthly management reporting package (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) and variance analyses with insightful operational commentary.
  • Operational Cadence: Establish a weekly operating flash covering revenue, job production, backlog, headcount, and cash.
  • KPI Architecture: Define and roll out tailored KPIs across audiences—from crew- and job-level metrics for field leadership to board and sponsor decks. Drive field adoption so metrics are trusted and acted upon.
  • Forecasting & Budgeting: Own the annual budget process, quarterly reforecast cycles, long-range planning, 13-week cash flow forecasts, and integrated three-statement financial models.
  • Working Capital & Project Visibility: Drive working capital visibility across unbilled/under-billed work, retainage, change order realizations, and collections. Partner closely with accounting on work-in-process (WIP) and project-level economics.
  • Systems & Integration: Partner with Accounting and IT to design the management reporting consolidation architecture, map legacy systems into a single view, and support the finance integration workstreams for future acquisitions.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Experience: 7+ years of progressive FP&A and strategic finance experience, ideally within a project- or job-costed industry (construction, utility infrastructure, industrial/field services, specialty contracting, or engineering).
  • The Builder Mindset: Demonstrated success building or materially upgrading an FP&A function where limited infrastructure existed previously.
  • Operational Fluency: Comfortable partnering directly with field and operations leaders to translate financial models into operational action. Strong working knowledge of job costing, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, and retainage.
  • Technical Rigor: Expert financial modeling skills (three-statement models, short-term cash flow forecasting). Advanced Excel and data tool capabilities (Power BI, Power Query, SQL); AI tool application a plus.
  • Hands-On Style: Willing to roll up your sleeves to build and produce models directly rather than just managing from above.
  • Background: Private equity-backed or acquisitive environment experience strongly preferred.
