Corporate Controller
Location: Remote (with travel as needed)
Compensation: Base salary of $160K + 20% annual target bonus + comprehensive benefits package
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Corporate Controller to own accounting and financial close across a newly combined, private equity-backed utility infrastructure services platform. The company delivers construction and maintenance services spanning electric distribution, transmission, substation, and communications infrastructure across the Pacific Northwest and Western US.
Following a recent private equity recapitalization and combination of two industry leaders, the company is investing heavily in its finance capabilities to deliver GAAP-compliant financial statements and robust operational reporting to management, lenders, and its private equity shareholder.
Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller is a key addition to the finance leadership team. We are seeking a hands-on candidate looking to build, establish processes, and make an immediate impact on a scaling organization.
Key Responsibilities:
(Note: Not all of the below are day-one responsibilities, but reflect the total scope expected to fall under this role as the platform builds out.)
Financial Close and Reporting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close across the combined entities, including the close calendar, task ownership, and timeline.
- Drive the close on the ground, working directly with accounting teams to set discipline and timelines, including on-site presence through close.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and maintain a supported balance sheet.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Own intercompany accounting, including monthly reconciliation of intercompany balances.
- Maintain fixed asset and equipment ledgers, including additions, disposals, depreciation, and equipment cost allocation to jobs.
- Deliver a complete and accurate trial balance to FP&A on a fixed schedule each month.
Job Cost and Work-in-Process (WIP)
- Own work-in-process accounting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition under ASC 606, estimated cost to complete, and over- and under-billings.
- Partner with project management and operations to validate job cost, change orders, and cost-to-complete estimates feeding revenue recognition.
- Own retainage, unbilled receivables, and related project balance sheet accounts.
- Monitor project costs against budget and support project-level margin reviews with operations.
Audit and Compliance
- Serve as the primary contact and liaison for the external audit, facilitating the company’s first-year audit and subsequent annual audits.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors on income tax provisions and compliance filings.
- Own sales and use tax determination/filing, and maintain business license/registration compliance across the operating footprint.
- Support union, workers' compensation, benefit plan, and prevailing wage audits.
- Support FP&A on lender compliance reporting, including identifying add-backs and providing supporting detail.
Process, Controls, and Systems
- Establish and document the internal control environment, including segregation of duties, approval thresholds, and cash controls.
- Own accounting process design for A/P, A/R, payroll, and job costing, standardizing workflows across operating entities.
- Own the chart of accounts and drive alignment to a single mapped structure.
- Partner with FP&A and IT on the systems roadmap, representing accounting requirements and supporting ERP optimization or migration.
- Support accounting integration for future acquisitions, including opening balance sheets and purchase accounting.
Team Development
- Build and develop the accounting team, with A/P, A/R, and payroll expected to report into this role over time.
- Define roles, standards, and accountability, developing team capabilities to delegate effectively as the department matures.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Qualifications: CPA preferred, with 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including time in a Controller or Assistant Controller capacity.
- Industry Experience: Direct background in a project- or job-costed business—ideally construction, utility infrastructure, or specialty contracting—including WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, retainage, and change order accounting.
- Technical Accounting: Demonstrated experience owning a monthly close end-to-end and delivering GAAP-compliant financial statements.
- Systems & Multi-Entity: Experience across multiple legal entities and multiple accounting systems, including consolidation and intercompany eliminations.
- Hands-On Operator: Comfortable operating hands-on (preparing the close directly rather than just reviewing others) while simultaneously building scalable processes.
- Audit & Tax Coordination: Experience serving as the primary contact for external audits and coordinating tax compliance with outside advisors.
- Specialized Knowledge: Working knowledge of union payroll, certified payroll, and prevailing wage reporting is a strong plus.
- PE / Acquisitive Background: Private equity-backed or acquisitive environment experience preferred, including purchase accounting and post-close integration.
- Software: Strong Excel capabilities; experience with construction ERP systems (such as Foundation, Viewpoint, Sage, or Procore) is a plus.
