Power Studies Engineer


Location: In office in Reno with with Travel | Full-Time


Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled Power Studies Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will use ETAP software to develop electrical models for geothermal and solar power facilities and conduct comprehensive system studies. Your work will include Arc Flash, Short Circuit, and Protection Coordination analyses, ensuring compliance with all relevant safety standards. You will also prepare detailed technical reports and provide recommendations to address any deficiencies found.


Key Responsibilities

  • Build detailed electrical models of geothermal and solar power plants using ETAP software.
  • Perform power system studies, including short circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash analyses for both new and existing facilities.
  • Evaluate electrical designs to ensure compliance with applicable safety standards such as the National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Analyze system study results and prepare detailed written reports.
  • Create and install arc flash labeling per NFPA 70E requirements.
  • Follow and enforce all applicable safety procedures (CAPP, OSHA, NFPA 70E).
  • Travel extensively to domestic and international sites to gather field data and apply post-study labeling.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 5+ years of experience performing Power System Studies with a focus on arc flash analysis.
  • Proficiency in ETAP or similar electrical system modeling software.
  • Strong understanding of electrical single-line diagrams, three-lines, and schematics.
  • Ability to model electrical components such as generators, transformers, PV modules, and batteries.
  • Experience with AutoCAD preferred.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, and IEEE 1584 standards.
  • Ability to interpret Time Current Characteristic (TCC) curves and relay settings.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel extensively.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in plant operating environments with exposure to noise, heat, cold, and vibration.
  • Must be capable of wearing required safety equipment and performing tasks that involve standing, bending, or kneeling for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate 4WD vehicles safely on highways and dirt roads.
  • Comfortable with computer-based work for long periods.
